Shilin Stone Forest and is a collection of karst formations located in the Shilin Yi Autonomous County of Yunnan Province, China, which is located about 120 kilometers (75 miles) from the provincial capital, Kunming. High cliffs seem to be rising from the land of stalactites, many of them are incredibly reminiscent of petrified trees, thus creating the illusion of the forest of stone. Since 2007, the two parts of this unique monument of nature, Stone Forest and the village Naigu Suogeyi have been recognized as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO as part of the South China karst formations.
1.Po legend, the forest is home to Ashima, a beautiful girl of the Yi people. She fell in love, but relatives forbade her to marry her lover and turned instead into a stone in the forest, which still bears her name. Each year at the 24 th day of the sixth lunar month, many of the people celebrate the festival of Yi, torches, during which the folk dances and wrestling.
