"Macam mana saya tahu mereka ahli Umno?

Umno Youth threatens to torch PKR HQ

A group of Umno Youth members gathered in front of their arch nemesis PKR's headquarters in Petaling Jaya late last night in a noisy demonstration, threatening to burn down the building.

About 300 people, according to PKR estimates, had converged in motorcycles and demanded that PKR withdraws its support from the Bersih 2.0 march on July 9.

PKR secretary-general Saifuddin Nasution Ismail, who rushed to the HQ after being alerted by party members, said that he arrived at about 11pm and observed the demonstration from a distance.

"How do I know they are Umno members? First of all, they were carrying Umno flags and they were wearing their red 'Patriot' T-shirts,” he told Malaysiakini when contacted.

“I could also see (Umno Youth exco Lukman Adam) and (former Perkasa Youth chief Arman Azha Abu Hanifah) leading the group."

Incendiary speeches on tape

Saifuddin also said that when he got there with several party members, they had recorded the fiery speeches made by Lukman to the Umno Youth crowd.

"He said that he wants to burn down the PKR HQ. He can deny it all he wants, but we have the recording," he said.

PKR Youth deputy information chief Rozan Azen Mat Rasip, who was also there, confirmed that Lukman had explicitly threatened to burn down the party headquarters if they were to continue participating in the July 9 rally.

"He also threatened (PKR de facto leader Anwar Ibrahim) and (Bersih 2.0 steering committee chairperson) S Ambiga for supporting the rally," he said, adding that about 50 PKR Youth members were there to monitor the demonstration.

According to Rozan, the Umno Youth group converged in two locations - first at a petrol station in Shah Alam, second at the Batu Tiga toll on the Federal Highway - before making their way to the PKR HQ in Tropicana, based on information from pro-Umno blogs.

He lodged a police report at the Tropicana police station, just a few doors down the road from the HQ, at about 11.40pm almost immediately after the crowd had dispersed.

No arrests made

Rozan said that he saw about 20 heavily-armed police officers on stand-by at the protest although no arrest were made.

"That's why we're puzzled," he said, urging the police to investigate the case under criminal intimidation.

Meanwhile, Lukman and Arman were unreachable for comment.

Though Bersih 2.0 - which stands for the Coalition of Free and Fair Elections - claims to be a politically non-partisan group, PKR is expected to mobilise tens of thousands of its members from all around the country for the massive rally on July 9.

Calling for electoral reforms, Bersih 2.0 will also be handing over a petition to the Istana Negara detailing their demands before the next general elections.

However, Umno Youth said that they will be organising a counter-rally on the same day, calling it the 'Patriot' rally.

Movement chief Khairy Jamaluddin Abu Bakar had previously said that their objective is to defy Bersih 2.0, as well as supporting engagement with the Election Commission.

Malay rights NGO Perkasa have also vowed to hold another counter-rally in the bid to stop the Bersih rally.

Umno Youth members protest Khairy death threat at PKR headquarters

PETALING JAYA, June 28 — Hundreds of Umno Youth members on motorcycles circled the PKR headquarters here late last night in a threatening manner ahead of the July 9 Bersih rally, ostensibly to protest a death threat against their leader Khairy Jamaluddin.

They arrived at the office block in Tropicana, just a few doors away from the Tropicana police station, claiming that a death threat sent to Khairy recently came from the opposition party, which denied the allegation.

The group of Umno Youth members protesting outside the PKR headquarters last night.

Executive committee member Lokman Noor Adam claimed he led 600 Umno Youth members at 10.30 last night, blocking the street in front of the PKR headquarters as they chanted loudly in the night.

He said the gathering of Selangor and Kuala Lumpur Umno Youth members was to “send a clear message to PKR that we are not afraid and we are ready to meet them even earlier.”

The Umno Youth chief, who is currently overseas, had said he received the threat via text message on Sunday warning him to call off a counter rally against the Bersih march for electoral reform.

PKR secretary-general Saifuddin Nasution told The Malaysian Insider that 300 Umno Youth members, mostly on motorcycles, had travelled from as far as Shah Alam but were not stopped by police despite waving Umno flags.

“They gave a speech outside, threatening that if the Bersih rally proceeds, they will harm Datuk Ambiga Sreenevasan and Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim,” he said, referring to the Bersih chief and PKR de facto leader respectively.

“They also threatened to burn down our HQ,” the Machang MP said, adding that he had lodged a police report at the police station a few doors down.

However, Lokman told The Malaysian Insider that Umno Youth did not threaten PKR with violence.

“We gave strict orders not to touch their headquarters. We are not like them,” he said.

PAS has promised to bring in hundreds of thousands of supporters from across the country as Pakatan Rakyat (PR) gears up for a second such rally in recent years.

The first Bersih rally in 2007 saw up to 50,000 people take to the streets of Kuala Lumpur before they were dispersed by police armed with tear gas and water cannons.

The demonstration has been partly credited for Pakatan Rakyat’s record gains in Election 2008, where the opposition pact swept to power in five states and won 82 parliamentary seats.

However, counter rallies are being planned by both Perkasa and Umno Youth who have pledged to march despite the government insisting it will not issue any permits for gatherings in the city on July 9.

Umno Youth defends mob-like action against PKR

By Debra Chong

June 28, 2011

KUALA LUMPUR, June 28 — Federal Territory Umno Youth chief Rizalman Mokhtar justified today the wing’s mob-like behaviour outside PKR’s headquarters last night as the only way to ensure its political foe gets the message that it will not tolerate any threats to its leadership.

Hundreds of Umno Youth members — dressed in the red T-shirts emblazoned with the words “Patriot” which were distributed yesterday at the launch of the wing’s Kelab Putera 1 Malaysia — were captured on video racing noisily on motorcycles around the PKR office in Petaling Jaya’s Merchant Square late last night, ahead of the July 9 Bersih rally.

The mob had ostensibly gathered to protest a death threat against their leader Khairy Jamaluddin.

They arrived at the office block, just a few doors away from the Tropicana police station, claiming that a death threat sent to Khairy recently came from the opposition party, which denied the allegation.

“We know PKR leaders are behind the death threat to our Youth chief. That’s why we want to send the message, ‘Don’t ever play with us’,” Rizalman told The Malaysian Insider when contacted this morning.

The video of the mob gathering at PKR headquarters last night has been uploaded online to YouTube. Some quarters have likened the motorcyclists’ actions to “rempits” or street hooligans.

Rizalman did not deny the comparisons that have cast a shadow on the wing ahead of its “peaceful” counter Bersih rally.

Instead, he defended the motorcyclists’ actions as the only way to drive home Umno Youth’s message that it was deadly serious about death threats targeting its leadership.

“I don’t think we have any other way. If we do it the proper way, this kind of group, it’s very hard to discuss with them. They always politicise things,” he said, referring to PKR.

“This is the maximum level to show we are serious,” he added.

Rizalman repeated his statement yesterday that if the electoral reform march by civil society, which PKR publicly supports, is not called off, then Umno Youth too will carry out its own march.

However, counter rallies are being planned by both Perkasa and Umno Youth. The latter group has applied for a permit to march despite the government insisting it will not issue any permits for gatherings in the city on July 9.

Umno’s dirty politics will benefit Pakatan, says PKR Youth

By Shazwan Mustafa Kamal

June 28, 2011

KUALA LUMPUR, June 28 — Umno’s threats and harassment of Pakatan Rakyat leaders will benefit the opposition in the long run as voters will see how Umno compromises public safety for political gain, PKR Youth has said.

Hundreds of Umno Youth members on motorcycles circled the PKR headquarters in Petaling Jaya late last night in a threatening manner ahead of the July 9 Bersih rally, ostensibly to protest a death threat against their leader Khairy Jamaluddin.

They arrived at the office block in Tropicana, just a few doors away from the Tropicana police station, claiming that a death threat sent to Khairy recently came from the opposition party, which denied the allegation.

Selangor PKR Youth information chief Mohd Saifullah Mohd Zulkifli charged that Umno Youth’s actions showed that Barisan Nasional (BN) no longer had the mandate to govern the country, and had to resort to unscrupulous means to stay in power.

“The dirty political games played by Umno-BN will benefit Pakatan Rakyat in this coming general election. People will not be fooled by disgusting and archaic form of politics,” he said in a statement today.

He said BN had failed to address more pressing concerns — wastages in government expenditure as well as the exorbitant cost of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak and wife’s overseas trips.

“The latest developments with Umno Youth and Perkasa’s counter rally against Bersih is an example... Leaders have been arrested and questioned by the police. It shows how the (certain) institutions are manipulated for public interests,” Mohd Saifullah added.

PAS has promised to bring in hundreds of thousands of supporters from across the country as Pakatan Rakyat gears up for a second such rally in recent years.
