[kl-bogel] Oriente Station, Lisbon (40 photos)

Oriente Station, with its graceful arches and the glass roof has become a real decoration of Lisbon. It was built to hold in the World Exhibition "Expo-98", the author of the project - the Spanish architect and engineer Santiago Calatrava, a source of inspiration for which has always been nature.

His creations are expressive shapes of plants or animals. For example, built according to his design TGV station in Lyon (France) is often compared to the huge prehistoric bird that is about to take off, he built bridges, not infrequently take the form of a skeleton. Station in Lisbon is no exception - a canopy over platforms like the forest, and the building station skeleton of a huge fish.

01. Oriente Station is a great transportation hub. It includes the railway and bus stations, as well as the homonymous metro station.

02. Santiago Calatrava was born in 1951 in Valencia. In 1968, Calatrava went to art school there, but a year later moved to the Higher Technical School of Architecture, where he graduated in 1975. He then graduated from the Federal Institute of Technology (ETH) in Zurich, where he received an engineering degree.

03. In 1981, Calatrava opened his own studio in Zurich, and worked as an architect and an engineer. His first project was a hangar the company's factory in the Swiss Jakem Munhvillene (1983-1985). In 1989 he opened a branch of its office in Paris.

04. Most of the projects of the architect are on the border of architecture and engineering. Complex and, simultaneously, an innovative design solution - the hallmark of his work. Also, they can clearly be seen the imprint of another vocation Calatrava - the profession of a sculptor.
